CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Charleston’s Waterfront Park will now be named after Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.

Charleston City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution to rename the park Riley Waterfront Park as a symbol of his “dedication to the pursuit of excellence and beauty and his untiring zeal to achieve both for the heritage and enjoyment of all.”

The resolution was read aloud by Mayor Pro-Tem Keith Waring as Riley’s family surprised the mayor by appearing on the balcony of City Hall.

“As was said of architect Christopher Wren — ‘If you seek his monument, look around you,'” Waring read. “Mayor Riley’s enduring legacy may be found in every corner of this city and in the lives of many of her citizens. In times of natural disaster and human tragedy, he served his city and her citizens with such courage, dignity and compassion that all emerged stronger.”
